Opposition Grows to Louisiana Coastal Lawsuits Against Oil & Gas Companies

October 17, 2016

The publisher of The Daily Iberian penned an editorial praising the Iberia (Louisiana) Parish Council for its unanimous vote to urge the parish "not be included in any group that files suit against oil companies" for alleged damage to coastal areas.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards is urging parishes to sue the oil and gas companies, and has been criticized for hiring a political donor to serve as plaintiffs' attorney for the state's litigation against the companies.

"Many have characterized the threatened lawsuits as a money-grab against companies that followed the rules in place years ago when the canals were dredged," wrote publisher Will Chapman. "If these companies complied with the rules and regulations in place when the work was done, it’s not fair to go back and now and try to make them responsible for things they weren’t asked to do."
