  • Georgia Legislative Panel Mulls Action Amid State's Huge Verdicts
October 07, 2019

A panel created by the Georgia legislature is studying the state’s legal system “and its impact on the cost of doing business” amid a run of multi-million dollar verdicts, according to the Daily Report.

The committee began work this summer and has been reviewing verdicts ranging from the tens of millions to the hundreds of millions. Shook Hardy & Bacon law firm partner and U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform (ILR) representative Cary Silverman pointed to a practice called “anchoring,” in which plaintiffs’ attorneys tell the jury what they should award. He said this has led to excessive verdicts.

Georgia’s lawsuit system ranked 41st in the country in the 2019 Lawsuit Climate Survey: Ranking The States, conducted by Harris Poll and released by ILR.
