A woman, her husband and her brother have been convicted on dozens of charges in federal court "in a family-run scheme to defraud a fund established to help victims of the 2010 Gulf oil spill of more than $3 million." Federal authorities said the three also recruited 15 other people to make false claims against BP PLC, amounting to almost $2 million between Aug. 27, 2010, and Dec. 5, 2011. (The Birmingham News)

The Eleventh Circuit has overturned an almost $6 million verdict against R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., ruling that the lower court "improperly excluded key evidence about a deceased smoker’s alcohol use." (Law360)
