James Russell DeLeon, the "largest funder of the $9.5 billion Ecuadorian suits against Chevron", has backed out of the case — pledging "to give no more money and to turn over his entire stake in the judgement to Chevron."

In doing so, he settled a suit against him by Chevron — and alleged "that he was knowingly funding a fraudulent suit."

DeLeon is a Harvard Law School classmate and longtime friend of Steven Donziger, the plaintiffs' attorney who has been the lead plaintiffs' attorney against Chevron. DeLeon had invested a reported $23 million in the litigation, as well as the majority of the funding behind the documentary, Crude, which was critical of Chevron.
