  • NYT: Federal Investigation Into Lawsuit Lender/Doctor Scheme is Intensifying
September 12, 2018

Federal prosecutors have ramped up their investigation into a scheme organized by lawsuit lenders, lawyers, and doctors that may have “lured women into having pelvic mesh implants removed,” The New York Times reports.

Prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York began looking into the scheme after The New York Times reported earlier this year that hundreds of women may have been “pressured into getting the implants removed to improve their odds of winning large cash settlements in lawsuits against the manufacturers.” Now, prosecutors have begun issuing subpoenas to find more information.

According to the story, women were flown to Florida for surgery, which was covered by lawsuit lenders in exchange for a cut of the settlement from the lawsuit against the implant manufacturer. Some doctors said in the original story that the surgeries may have been “dangerous and irresponsible.”
