  • Texas Governor Signs Municipality Litigation Transparency Bill
June 12, 2019

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed a bill this week aimed at bringing transparency to the process by which municipalities hire private lawyers for litigation, the Southeast Texas Record reports.

The bill is a response to the growing trend of private plaintiffs’ attorneys pitching local governments on potential lawsuits that have typically been left to the state attorney general. The new law requires contingency fee contracts between local government entities and private lawyers to be approved by the attorney general, and also gives the attorney general the power to reject a contract if the state is already addressing the issue.
