Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa stands to profit off a county he represents in the state senate for the legal work he’s doing with major plaintiffs’ lawyer Mikal Watts in a multi-million dollar opioid lawsuit, the Southeast Texas Record reports.

According to the article, Hinojosa can charge Hidalgo County up to $3,800 an hour, the maximum amount allowed under Texas law, or just over five percent of the total settlement or judgment, whichever is less. The total value of the litigation could be worth millions. Hinojosa’s firm is one of four law firms involved in the lawsuit. In total, the four firms can take up for 35 percent of the lawsuit’s outcome or bill the county an hourly rate, whichever is less.

Hinojosa also tried unsuccessfully to bring a lawsuit on behalf of another county in his senate district.
