  • Total Securities Lawsuit Filings in 2019 Nearly Double Twenty-Year Average
January 02, 2020

The surge of securities class action lawsuit filings continued in 2019 with a total number of fillings that was 99 percent higher than the annual average between 1997 and 2017, D&O Diary’s Kevin LaCroix reports.

There were 404 securities class action lawsuit filings in federal court last year, which nearly doubles the annual average of 203 filings over the last twenty years. This total is in line with the heightened filing numbers of 2018 (402 lawsuits) and 2017 (412). The litigation rate, or the number of lawsuit filings relative to the number of public companies was an all-time high 9.1 percent, meaning nearly one-in-ten public companies faced a securities class action lawsuit last year.
